"Teaching & Learning With MUVEs" Postgrad Program

Just received a message sent to the Facebook Second Life for Educators Group, about a free 1-year-long online postgraduate programme: "The European funded MUVEnation project has just launched 'Teaching & Learning With MUVEs.' This is a one-year postgraduate programme, delivered online, for future and in-service teachers who want to use innovative methods and tools to address learners motivation and participation issues in compulsory education. What impact can 3D virtual worlds like Second Life have on teaching and learning settings?" You can participate by taking the full course or simply observe and participate in discussions. Although the program is free, they are limiting it to 80 participants.

"I Am Library" by Bernadette Swanson (UC Davis)

Just posted to YouTube, Bernadette Swanson's beautiful machinima, "I Am Library: an ode to discovery and collective creativity in Second Life," created for her presentation at the Bridging Worlds 2008 Conference in Singapore.

Wikirage

Just posted to the ILI list--a message from Dave Wilson at Trinity University, re Wikirage. According to Dave, "The site keeps an up-to-the-minute list of the most edited Wikipedia entries by pulling in data straight from Wikipedia." Dave uses this site in teaching students about Wikipedia. It would be a very nice supplement to WikipediaVision, a mashup of anonymous Wikipedia edits and Google Maps. One way to use Wikipedia Vision is to click on "diff" for a recently edited article to show learners the new edit and the previous version. It's usually quite a revelation to learners to see how often Wikipedia articles are edited all over the world, even though what they're seeing is a select subset of Wikipedia edits.

Brief Report - 1st Mellon Seminar in Digital Humanities

On October 8th, 35 people gathered in real life (RL) and 16 avatars gathered in Second Life (SL) at the Digital Library Federation's (DLF) island, Entropia, for the 1st of 9 of these Seminars. There was a live feed video into SL of the RL audience and the two faculty conducting the Seminar--Todd Presner (UCLA) and Jeffrey Schnapp (Stanford). So I did my best to type a transcript into the text chat. The faculty plan to mount that transcript on a wiki linked from the Mellon Seminar website and if possible, will also mount the archived video. The next Seminar will take place on November 5th in the UCLA Visualization Portal, and we hope to be able to broadcast into SL again, on Entropia. Stay tuned and check out the Mellon Seminar website for more details regarding topics and speakers. This entire effort represents an excellent form of collaboration among faculty, librarians and technology/computing center staff, something that we are striving for in many of our information literacy endeavors.

CARL SCIL Business Meeting Cancelled
