Feedback by 12/18/09: Draft Model School Library Standards (California)

This request for feedback was forwarded from the SCIL (Southern California Instruction Librarians) list. It seems that the new title for Library Media Teachers (LMTs) is "Teacher Librarians." Page 35 of this document describes the qualifications required for this position as "both a classroom teaching credential and a teacher librarian credential." After reviewing the draft, use this feedback form by 12/18/09.

The Draft Model School Library Standards for California Public Schools (School Library Standards) are now available for field review on the California Department of Education Web page (http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/lb/).

In March 2009 the State Board of Education authorized Jack O'Connell, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, to develop the standards based on Education Code Section 18101 which states:
The State Board of Education shall adopt standards, rules and regulations for school library services.

The draft School Library Standards include:
• Model School Library Standards for Students that delineate what students should know and be able to do at each grade level, K-6, or grade span, 7-8 and 9-12, and;
• Model School Library Program Standards that describe the staffing, collections and resources, including technology, expected in an effective school library that will enable students to achieve the School Library Standards for Students.

The field review period will continue through Friday, December 18, 2009. Your comments and suggestions for improvement are welcome. A form is available on the Web page and comments may be submitted via email (librarystandards@cde.ca.gov), fax (916-319-0172) or mail. The School Library Standards are expected to go to the State Board of Education for approval at its meeting on March 10-11, 2010.

If you have questions about the School Library Standards, please contact either Barbara Jeffus, School Library Consultant, 916-319-0445, bjeffus@cde.ca.gov, or Susan Martimo, Administrator, 916-319-0446, smartimo@cde.ca.gov.
